Assessment of the quality of urban squares in the historical and cultural center of Sobral/CE

Abstract

The present article aims to evaluate the quality of the squares that make up the Historic and Cultural Center of the municipality of Sobral, in the state of Ceará. The methodology used was based on the public square evaluation criteria of De Angelis, Castro, and De Angelis Neto (2004), focusing on quantitative and qualitative aspects related to infrastructure, maintenance, lighting, safety, environmental comfort, and the presence of urban equipment. The selected squares were: Praça da Sé, Praça da Várzea, Praça do Amor, Praça da Coluna da Hora, and Praça do Teatro. Each evaluated item was assigned a score ranging according to its state of conservation and functionality. The results indicated that although some squares received good evaluations in terms of landscaping, tree cover, and location, the lack of maintenance and the presence of inadequate equipment compromise the quality of these public spaces. The analysis carried out highlights the need for interventions in the studied squares focused on conservation and safety, in order to ensure better conditions of use and to promote the appreciation of these collective living spaces.
