Natural and cultural heritage of a municipality located in two rock formations in the semi-arid northeast

The territorial boundaries of the municipality of São João da Canabrava, Piauí, are located in two formations, Cabeças and Pimenteiras, which have a rich environmental history. Therefore, the objective was to assess the state of conservation of the Natural Heritage of this municipality, based on the hydrogeological and biogeographic dynamics, human actions and the perceptions of the natural world of the local population. The narrative was described based on the three levels of Environmental History. It was found that the Cabeças and Pimenteiras formations belong to the Canindé Group, part of the Parnaíba Basin. Regarding socio-environmental perceptions, 68% of the interviewees reported that the Natural Heritage of the municipality is preserved and indirectly relate the natural assets to the geological formations. They demonstrated knowledge of the main natural resources of the municipality, their importance and their conservation status. However, the population points out a problem common to several Brazilian regions: the poor management of natural resources. Therefore, understanding these conditions is crucial for creating public policies aimed at conserving the municipality's Natural Heritage and for the action of participatory citizenship aimed at sustainable regional development.
