What does the body have to say to social theory?

Arguments in defense of the body as a “point of view”, “important object” or “perspective” in the Social Sciences have been growing since the 1990s. In this paper, I discuss what precisely the study of the body has to say to social theory, or in other words, what is the potential of this topic in the theoretical scope of Social Sciences. I seek to explain the emergence of the body as “object” and analytical “perspective”, starting from its intrinsic ambiguity, as well as the ambiguity of institutional arrangements in western modernity. Afterwards, I explore the possible contributions of the body to themes such as the relations between action and structure, and the construction of subjectivity.
