Motivations and consequences of the use of psychoactive substances in the labor activity of military police: integrative review
Keywords:

Introduction: The use of substances psychoactive by military police officers requires special attention due to their work context. Such use of psychoactive substances, in the face of stressful and potentially traumatic situations, can trigger mental and behavioral disorders. Objective: to investigate the scientific evidence on the motivations and the consequences of the problematic use of psychoactive substances in the labor activity of military police officers. Method: integrative literature review, carried out in the CINAHAL, COCHRANE, LILACS, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, PubMed, SCOPUS databases and in the SciELO, using the descriptors: Police, Military, Substance-Related Disorders, Professional Performance. 2,713 full articles available in Portuguese, English or Spanish, regardless of their time frame, were selected, however, duplicates and those that did not answer the guiding question were excluded. Thus, the final sample consisted of six articles. Results: the stress inherent in labor activity contributed to the problematic use of psychoactive substances, being alcohol and cannabis the most used substances. The use of these substances contributed to absenteeism, impaired judgment, indiscipline and poor interpersonal relationships, which compromised the professional performance of police officers. Conclusion: The present study presents a description of factors related to the use of psychoactive substances and the performance of the work activity of the Military Police.
