The paper aims to review the duality involving hierarchy and equality attributed to the social network of the Amazon Northwest, from the position of the Yuhupdëh, usually known as Makú and/or forest Indians. Therefore, the distinction of two social figures, the river Indians and the forest Indians, that emerge from this duality will be problematized. On the one hand, there is the hierarchical, the sedentary, the rigid, the closed, the ideal, the exogamous, the horticulturist, the ‘civilized’; on the other, the egalitarian, the nomadic, the fluid, the open, the pragmatic, the endogamous, the hunter, the ‘primitive’. The experiment of this article is to deal with the problem of hierarchy and equality that underlies the distinction between forest Indians and river Indians based on two displacements. The first is to examine the problem of hierarchy and equality from the specific perspective of Yuhupdëh. The second consists of critically analysing the model of the theory of domination presupposed in the asymmetrical relationship between yuhupdëh groups and tukano groups.
