Shortly before my initiation, I heard my ialaxé say: “the axé house is alive.” This sentence took root in me like a seed. Since then, I have been trying to listen to what it means, not just with my ears, but with my entire body, like one listens to the drum. This photo-ethnographic essay emerges from that sensitive listening, cultivated through the daily experience of an axé house, where Candomblé takes root and is reinvented every day. I understand the house as a living organism, a field of forces, an affective and ontological construction. The ethnography practiced here is not merely observation: it is participation, drawing, singing, gesture. Inspired by authors such as Marcelin (1999), Dumans (2021), Santos (2023), Alvarenga (2017) and Krenak (2022), I propose an understanding of the house not as a building or property, but as a living entity that breathes, calls, repels, and demands care. The axé house has a body, desire, ethics, and agency. It exists in a network with ancestors, with plants, with mud, with silence, with festivity. Indeed, festivity is understood here as a radical politics of celebrating life. This visual essay is an attempt to translate what capital cannot devour: enchantment, vibration, other time. By sketching this house ethnographically, I seek to record the unspeakable, the subtle, that which escapes linear language. Each image-caption offers a possible path for a sensitive translation of experience. This is not about illustration, but about relation. Each photo is part of the house. Everything here is body and world.
