Spatial dynamics and impacts along the estuary banks in the metropolitan region of Aracaju-SE

Abstract

Advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques have simplified information extraction for territorial planning and decision-making. Brazilian tropical estuaries face pressure due to population and urban growth, becoming areas of high population density amenable to analysis using these techniques. This study aims to comprehend the causes and consequences of urban growth over 28 years in an estuary in Aracaju, Sergipe, with a focus on sanitary conditions. The greatest growth variation occurred between 1990 and 2000, approximately 23%, driven by economic development. The most significant vegetation reduction was between 2010 and 2016, with a loss of 37%, attributed to real estate pressure. Between 2016 and 2018, an intensification of consolidated urban space was observed, not accompanied by adequate basic infrastructure, especially sanitation. These changes have impacted such as ecosystem degradation, water pollution, silting of the Poxim River, and recurring flooding, affecting residents. Resolving these socio-environmental issues requires a more effective approach from the public authorities, complying with current legislation, and considering the existing urban structure.
