Tourism, Sociospatial Segregation and Peripheral Urban Revolution in the Baianão Complex in Porto Seguro, Bahia

Abstract

This study aims to understand how social resistance movements in the Baianão Complex the largest peripheral area of Porto Seguro (Bahia) contribute to confronting the socio-spatial segregation driven by tourism-led urbanization in the city. Grounded in historical-dialectical materialism and drawing on the theoretical frameworks of David Harvey and Henri Lefebvre, the research adopts a qualitative, interdisciplinary approach. The methodological process involved administering structured questionnaires, conducting semi-structured interviews, performing non-participant observation, and carrying out categorical content analysis. The results reveal that these collectives operate through cultural, pedagogical, and political
interventions such as poetry gatherings, spoken-word performances, grassroots educational programs, and institutional advocacy challenging the underemployment, structural racism, and invisibility resulting from commodified tourism. The study concludes that these resistance tactics constitute forms of urban revolution, as they foster popular appropriation of space and strengthen peripheral identity, thereby asserting the right to the city. In this regard, the study’s theoretical contributions offer a new analytical perspective for urban studies.
