Abstract

In the introduction to the book by Georg Simmel (1858-1918), Les problèmes de la philosophie de l'histoire, Raymond Boudon (1934-2013) reflects on Simmilian notions of the scientific method and presents the main themes that concerned scholars and researchers of the human and social sciences between the 19th and 20th centuries. The prominent sociologist, whose work is dedicated to showing how consolidated behavior in society reflects the sum of the choices made by individuals, in this introduction, seeks to demonstrate the relevance of his reflections by the German sociologist and outline the general lines of an epistemology of the human sciences, revealing its neo-Kantian bases and indicating the criticisms of historical realism. Thus, Boudon's introduction to Simmel's thought, now available, aims, ultimately, to indicate both the possibilities of scientific validation for the humanities, as well as ways to identify and overcome the dogmatism and skepticism promoted by "explanatory models" mistakenly taken astheories.
