Abstract Despite a series of initiatives in order to deploy a new approach to the management of Brazilian clubs, such as the Law 8.672/93 Zico, Pele Law 9.615/98 and Law No. 10.672/03 and the CFC Resolution No. 1,005 / NBCT1 04 and 10:13, the level of disclosure of Brazilian associations is lower than those published by foreign clubs. At this point, we sought to analyze the level of conservatism of financial statements reported by the Brazilian football associations over the period 2007-2012. To this end, given the lack of market variables such as stock price, was used the model of Ball and Shivakumar (2005) for measurement of Accounting Conservatism. As a main result, it was noted that the club managers with higher levels of debt have displayed opportunistic behavior in adopted accounting choices, especially in the recognition of assets, seeking to improve debt ratios, thus subsequently adding the ability of associations constrict debt.
