Women artists, decoloniality and contemporary art: ways of seeing and creative frictions

Abstract

This article is the result of ongoing research on Visual Arts in Latin America from a decolonial perspective in the Contemporary Art in Latin America, Creativity and Innovation Research Project and from discussions in the Visual Arts Creativity and Innovation Laboratory - LACRIA and the Research Group Visual Arts and Creativity - AVEC. From the paths found in the investigative path, we chose to discuss here some intricacies of the production of women artists, revisiting the ways of seeing, perceiving challenges and frictions when observing the Art market and the historical narratives that determine and prioritize the production of male artists. In this way, we seek to demonstrate relevant issues for the construction of discourses and the revision of Contemporary Art based on the work of some women artists who dialogue directly in their works with the decolonial perspective in Latin America. Finally, we highlight in the analysis the production in Visual Arts of Santa Maria-RS, contextualizing concern for a critical reflection on the creative processes in a decolonial perspective and we signal the need for the continuity of the registration and visibility of these and other works of women artists.
