The textile poetry of Samuel Abrantes: constructive methodology of costumes in “O Prospero”

Abstract

This article aims to address the theoretical questions about the constructive
methodology of Samuel Abrantes’ costumes, through the analysis of the costume
of the character “O Prospero”, object of the dissertation research in the Professional
Masters in arts, which performs the construction of textile surfaces with waste
and scrap materials. The unfolding of his creative process demonstrates the artist’s entire methodology and his ability to create poetry with new textile surfaces, different from those available for sale in the market. The polyphony between art,
technology and craftsmanship, united in a visual harmony and full of meanings,
are the result of his textile poetics. Its constructive methodology can be a tool in the creation process for different artistic genres. The article is part of a dissertation project, with ongoing research, within IFCE’s PPGARTES.
