Abstract

"Falta em português uma tradução do quarto romance de Cormac McCarthy, Suttree. Por que isso deveria ser inquietante? Porque o português é uma das línguas mundiais dominantes, Cormac McCarthy é um dos mais aclamados romancistas americanos da contemporaneidade e Suttree, publicado em 1979, é um dos seus mais louvados romances. McCarthy — contemplado com a prestigiosa ‘Bolsa MacArthur’ (MacArthur Fellowship) (1981), também conhecida como “a Bolsa dos gênios,” com o National Book Award (1992), com o ‘National Book Critics Circle Award’ (1992) pelo romance All the Pretty Horses, com o prêmio ‘James Tait Black Memorial’ (2007), e com o Prêmio Pulitzer em Ficção (2007) por The Road — pertence ao alto clero dos escritores americanos. Enquanto oito de seus dez romances foram traduzidos para o português - O Guarda do Pomar, 1996 [The Orchard Keeper, 1965], Filho de Deus, 1994 [Child of God, 1974], Meridiano de Sangue, 2006 [Blood Meridian,1985], Todos os Belos Cavalos, 1993 [All the Pretty Horses, 1992], A Travessia, 1999 [The Crossing, 1994], Cidades da Planície, 2001 [Cities of the Plain, 1998], Onde os Velhos Não Têm Vez, 2007 [No Country for Old Men, 2005] e A Estrada, 2007 [The Road, 2006] — Suttree também espera por sua merecida conversão para esta língua literária preeminente. A futura tradução exigirá os talentos de um artesão maior, a fim de trazer ao português, com propriedade, as enormes complexidades do romance e, ao fazê-lo, enriquecer a biblioteca da literatura mundial disponível em língua portuguesa. [...]"
