Polemizando sobre a decadência: confrontos na Espanha bourbônica

Abstract

O ensaio analisa as repercussões e consequências da polêmica suscitada pela publicação do artigo “Espagne”, escrito em 1782 por Morvilliers na Enciclopédia Metódica. Dentro desse projeto de compilação de conhecimentos, o artigo de Masson denuncia o fatal estado de decadência em que se encontraria a Espanha, provocado, segundo o autor, pelo obscurantismo religioso e a ineficácia dos governos. Tais afirmações geram várias respostas e apologias que recuperam as heranças do pensamento espanhol e discutem os destinos do império e da Europa em um mundo convulsionado pela iminência da revolução.

Alfredo Cordiviola, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco

Doutor (1998) em Hispanic and Latin American Studies pela University of Nottingham (Reino Unido), é Professor Adjunto 4 do Departamento de Letras da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE).
