Abstract

“Conto de escola” de Machado de Assis, publicado em 1884, no jornal Gazeta de Notícias, e em 1896, em Várias histórias, foi transformado em livro’ infantil pela editora Cosac Naify em 2002. Bastante estudado nos cursos de letras e pedagogia das universidades brasileiras, o conto suscitou interpretações diversas. No presente trabalho, procuro demonstrar como o autor trata dialeticamente a função do olhar; ora como instrumento de exercício do poder do adulto/forte sobre a criança/fraca, ora como exercício da intersubjetividade que leva à descoberta de si mesmo.

Doutora em Literatura Brasileira (USP), Pós-Doutorado pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2002-2003), é professora da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso.
