Abstract

Este ensaio discute o modo pelo qual os ideais Regionalistas de Gilberto Freyre influenciaram os princípios e os propósitos do Teatro Popular do Nordeste (TPN), grupo teatral concebido e liderado pelos escritores Ariano Suassuna e Hermilo Borba Filho. Observa-se ainda, em particular, como cada um desses dois fundadores do TPN iria se identificar mais enfaticamente com aspectos disitintos, e aparentemente conflitantes, desse legado; uma vez que o Regionalismo de Freyre pretendia-se, ao mesmo tempo, "Tradicionalista" e "Modernista".
