A admonição perpétua: representações do inferno nos tempos coloniais

Abstract

Este ensaio analisa os modos de representação do inferno no imaginário colonial hispano-americano. Figura onipresente em todas as instâncias que articulavam a vida pública e privada nas Índias, o inferno se transforma em instrumento central das políticas de evangelização que objetivam a extirpação das idolatrias e a contínua vigilância de si.  Evidências dessas políticas, e as formas em que se manifesta nas diversas composições da época, são abordadas neste artigo.
