Physical activity and eating habits in the Brazilian public health system (SUS)

Introdução: Chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) represent an important public health problem and are strongly associated with physical inactivity and inadequate eating habits. Among health workers, working conditions may hinder the adoption of healthy lifestyles, increasing vulnerability to NCD risk factors. Objective: This study aimed to analyze dietary profile and physical activity practices among workers of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) in the municipality of Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil. Methology: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. A total of 207 public health workers participated in the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire containing sociodemographic, occupational, physical activity, and dietary habit variables. Results: Most participants were female (82.1%), aged 40 years or older (76.8%), and had a monthly income of up to two minimum wages (55.1%). Low participation in vigorous occupational physical activity was observed; however, a high prevalence of active commuting (80%) and leisure-time physical activity was identified. Dietary habits revealed maintenance of traditional Brazilian foods, especially rice (63.35%) and beans (54.45%), associated with significant consumption of processed and ultra-processed foods. Low intake of fruits and vegetables was also identified. Conclusion: The findings highlight the need for institutional strategies aimed at promoting health among SUS workers.
