Growth and conditional convergence of Brazilian states: an application of the extended Solow model with panel data

ince the 2000s, it is possible to notice a series of national economic policies whose effects are notably favorable to the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. These effects are visible especially until the political and economic crisis of 2015. For this reason, the objective of this research is to analyze the economic growth and income convergence of Brazilian states in the period from 2006 to 2014, in the light of the conditional convergence model. The contribution of this research is to estimate the convergence model of Mankiw et al (1992) for the Brazilian states, using panel data. The results of absolute convergence show that without investments, inequalities would take an average of 35.9 years to be halved. That time drops to 4.7 years on average inthe expanded model with human capital. This shows how investments in physical and human capital are relevant to reduce inequalities in national income.
