Abstract

This study investigates the concept of possible in the context of mathematical knowledge, based on children’s basic notions about probability and combinatorics. One hundred and eighty children, attending the final year of kindergarten to the 5th grade of elementary school, were individually interviewed. The interview consisted of questions about situations which involved probability (particularly those involving the notion of possibility/chance) and combinatorics (in particular those involving Cartesian product problems). Participants were asked to justify their responses. The information gathered showed that even the youngest children had notions about possibility, this being 2 EM TEIA – Revista de Educação Matemática e Tecnológica Iberoamericana – vol. 7 - número 1 – 2016 more evident in relation to the notion of chance. We noticed a progression from one year to another up to the 3rd year with regard to the concept of chance. Such a progression was not present in the years 3 to 5 of elementary school. With regard to combinatorial reasoning, the progression was less evident between consecutive school years. It was concluded that the concept of possible is not a unitary concept, as it involves different facets of the mathematical knowledge
