Architecture from inside out: workshop of space planning with positive template drawing stencils

Abstract

One of the key moments during course of architecture and urban planning happens when the students, after working with volumes and spatial composition and acquiring knowledge of the architectural drawing, starts to conceive and design their projects through drawings and not only through volumetric models. At this moment, the student starts to deal with the spatiality in a different way, it needs to be able to propose spaces and not only represent them through the drawing, thus needing the ability determine the area of those spaces that will host the activities coming from the project program. Noting the difficulties in this vital phase of teaching the disciplines of architectural design, the present article presents the teaching tools of dimensioning through furniture modules in workshops called "Architecture from Inside Out" developed through three semesters in the course of Architectural Design Studio III, at the Universidade Católica de Pernambuco, in Brazil, in addition to discussing the results obtained, which proved to be superior to the results using the traditional methodology. This article also discusses the different methodologies and sources of research for the design of architectural design and its representation.
