Homological analysis of projective geometry in the work of Djanira da Motta e Silva as a teaching: an experience report

Abstract

Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences was the alternative used to facilitate the understanding of abstract concepts in the didactic strategy presented in this article. The 7ccurred 7ccurred experience 7ccurred during the first semester of 2021, during the Projective Geometry classes of the Teaching Training Degree in Graphic Expression at the Federal University of Pernambuco. The main goal of the didactic experience was to analyze the works of Djanira da Motta e Silva, a Brazilian modernist artist, to verify if they hold homologous properties of Projective Geometry. There were two secondary goals. The first one sought to understand the artist’s aesthetic conception by researching her biography and the social context in which she lived. The second one aimed to carry out bibliographic research on Homology (Projective Theory) to support the analysis of two of her paintings, “O Circo” (1944) and “Study for the poster of the theatrical play ‘Orfeu da Conceição’” (1956), to identify possible homologous transformations. After completing the didactic experience, it was possible to affirm that the two paintings present examples of homologous transformations. This fact leads to the conclusion that they both hold intrinsic geometric content. In addition, it was also possible to perceive that the didactic experience made the Geometric concept of Homology less abstract, a fact that can facilitate the teaching-learning process and would bring the topic closer to the reality of the students.
