AI Impacts on Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities and Older Adults in the Labour Market

Resumo

Purpose: This study investigates the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the social inclusion of people with disabilities and older adults in the labour market, identifying both the opportunities created by AI-enabled technologies and the risks they pose to accessibility, fairness, and participation in employment.

Methodology/approach: A narrative review synthesises academic literature, policy analyses, and empirical evidence to assess how AI systems, digital platforms, and assistive technologies shape labour market inclusion for marginalised groups.

Research, Practical & Social implications: Findings show that AI can improve accessibility, provide personalised support, and broaden employment opportunities. Nonetheless, significant challenges persist, including digital divides affecting disadvantaged groups, limited digital literacy, and algorithmic biases that may reinforce ableism and ageism. Inclusive design, equitable technological access, and supportive welfare frameworks are essential. The study underscores the need for policymakers, employers, developers, and community organisations to adopt ethical and inclusive AI practices.

Originality/value: The research offers an interdisciplinary, socially oriented contribution by integrating perspectives from AI ethics, accessibility, and labour market inclusion, identifying key gaps and future research avenues.

Com 40 anos de atuação profissional em cargos executivos em grandes empresas, tenho 13 anos de experiência na gestão acadêmica de cursos de graduação e pós-graduação lato sensu (MBA) nas áreas de Administração, Contabilidade e Economia, em que estruturei Projetos Pedagógicos de Curso, participei de vários processos de avaliação, autorização e reconhecimento de curso e reconhecimento institucional junto ao MEC. Desenvolvi minha carreira atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Finanças, Estratégia e Marketing. Os meus principais interesses de pesquisa relacionam-se com Desempenho Financeiro, Práticas de ESG, Uso de Inteligencia Artificial (AI), Indicadores de Performance (KPI), Estratégias de Marketing, Acessiblidade Digital e Inclusão Social.
