Purpose: This research seeks to analyze the influence of organizational nostalgia on the knowledge of the work of airport agents in a specific empirical context.
Design/ methodology/ approach: Based on ethnographic techniques (i.e., non-participant observation, informal interviews, and documents), it was concluded that nostalgia encourages an escape to the past due to the valuation of work, both financially and in recognition of these, recalling a 'golden age'.
Research, Practical & Social Implications: The knowledge of the airport agent's work is perpetuated by the nostalgic and recognized ‘Varig style’ knowledge. The ‘Varig standard’ emerges the nostalgia not only of agents, but also of customers, about the golden times, in which the central concern was linked to people and their well-being, whether at work, when focused on the internal customer, in travel, when focused on the comfort and pleasure associated with traveling by plane.
Originality/ value: This study also transcends the hierarchy among the different types of knowledge involved in the conception of work, placing emphasis on a professional activity that has a fundamental, social and economic role in the Brazilian civil aviation sector, which, however, is still few explored in academic research.
