Purpose: Faced with a widespread perception that experiencing a calling brings positive results for a person's career, and also that such callings have an altruistic origin, the present study aims to assess whether the orientation towards social comparison impacts the perception of experiencing a calling and, furthermore, whether narcissism affects the relationship between the calling and the individual's commitment to his career and to the organization.
Design/methodology/approach: Using structural equation modeling for data modeling, the measurement model was evaluated - discriminant validity, convergent validity and reliability.
Research, Practical & Social implications: The study brings theoretical and practical contributions by presenting positive consequences for the career from personal characteristics considered negative, and that these characteristics do not necessarily bring negative effects on the individual's commitment to the organization.
Originality/value: The study proves to be relevant in its theoretical and practical contributions, either by expanding the literature on occupational calls, exploring antecedents usually seen as negative to the career, or by offering new elements for professionals and recruiters to guide career-related decisions.
