Abstract

Purpose: Systematize the functioning of the digital banking business model, through the analysis of its main elements, based on platform models.

Methodology/approach: A multiple case study was conducted using the model proposed by Parker, Alstyne, and Choudary (2018), which allowed the verification of ten elements categorized into analysis items.

Research, Practical & Social implications: As a theoretical contribution, the business model displays the dichotomy between proposing an inclusive digital format in contradiction with dependence on technology. In practical terms, the type of platform in the analyzed digital banks differs in monetization methods, competitive strategies, and use of APIs. As a social contribution, it offers a digital model that overcomes geographical barriers and is customer-centric; however, it may be exclusionary for people who do not possess or are unable to operate digital technology, as well as distancing the traditional human and relational factor from banking and credit activities and disregarding exceptions.

Originality/value: Application of a platform-specific analysis model in digital banking cases, within the imperative scenery of corporate platforms across various sectors.
