Abstract

The pedagogy of liberation was realized as one of the central paradigms for educational theory and practice, leading the figure of Paulo Freire to the position of patron of Brazilian education. Its relevance, however, went beyond the national scope. Strongly inspired by a revolutionary humanism, the pedagogy of liberation is configured as a field where hope in humanity, in its ontological vocation to be more, to overcome the barriers of dehumanization and fatalistic immobilism, becomes not just a theory of knowledge anchored in revolutionary praxis, but in a driving force that understands and encourages the revolutionary overcoming of limit situations. Therefore, this analysis sought, through a bibliographical review, to investigate the place that the relationship between determinism – or determinity – and freedom occupies in Freire’s thought, aiming to find tools that enable the negation of conformism in the face of barbarism, through the affirmation of human power in its ability to know the world in order to transform it.
