The anxiety of influence and the limits of critique

The position of the listener serves as the starting point for Filipe Campello in his work Crítica dos Afetos. This interpretive key to Campello’s theoretical and methodological undertaking is addressed at the article’s outset. I propose to demonstrate how this choice situates the work within the conceptual and normative framework established by Judith Shklar and adopted in varying ways by Iris Young and Miranda Fricker. Subsequently,from a less interpretive perspective, I offer an analysis of what I consider to be one of the limitations of this approach while exploring potential avenues for expanding the critical imagination of ‘impossible writing’ and experiences of freedom. I argue that these paths should extend beyond the limits imposed by the anxiety of influence, enabling us, at last, to broaden the semantic horizon of freedom by jointly imagining ways to feel, be together, and share what is common.
