Abstract

The risks to Brazilian education from the loss of secularism in the Brazilian state are listed from the election of President Bolsonaro and his appointments to the Ministry of Education. The sequence of inept ministers who have occupied the most influential position in Brazilian education is described, showing little affection for the educational issue during the period from 2019 to 2022, and alignment with a radical far-right discourse. The perniciousness of a confessional state, which mixes ideology, denialism, and religion is revealed by the period, in which Minister Pastor Milton Ribeiro was at the head of the Ministry of Education, through hisdiscourse and his lack of sensitivity to educational issues. Finally, it is demonstrated that there is a difficulty in escaping from the condition of interference of religion in the Brazilian state in face of the political strength of certain religious groups, especially evangelicals, even in face of the election of a government that appears to have less commitment to this field
