Retention basins are soil conservation techniques for the temporary accumulation of water and for suspended solids sedimentation. The evaluation of the potential implementation of these structures focuses on cost and operational aspects, but minor attention has been given to its constant maintenance requirement. This study evaluated the physical and hydraulic characteristics of retention basins from the “Vida Nova Rio Formiga” program, constructed in road and pasture areas. An infiltration monitoring system was used, along with a Guelph permeameter for determining saturated soil hydraulic conductivity and a Stolf impact penetrometer for measuring resistance to penetration. It was found that basins in road areas received more water and sediments compared to those in pasture areas. Basins B9 and B3 had the largest variations in water level, while B2 had the smallest. Regarding the hydraulic conductivity, B4 and B2 (pasture) had higher values, in contrast to B9 and B1 (road). Penetration resistance was higher in pasture areas. The results highlight the need for careful maintenance and the importance of considering soil compaction and sediment control to optimize the function of the retention basins.
