About the Journal
Focus and Scope
The Brazilian Journal of Physical Geography is a bimonthly journal of scientific divulgation, initiated in 2008. Technical-scientific articles, literature reviews and scientific notes to be published in the Journal must be original, unpublished and of relevance to the environmental sciences. The Editorial committee opens an exception only for papers presented at Congresses in the form of simple summaries.
Open Access statement
Revista Brasileira de Geografia Física is an Open Access journal, meaning that all content is available free of charge and immediately, at no cost to the user or their institution. Users can read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, or use them for any other legal purpose, without requesting prior permission from the editor or the author, as long as they comply with the Creative Commons license applied to the published content. This declaration is in accordance with the definition of open access provided by the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI).
Peer Review Process
The Revista Brasileira de Geografia Física (RBGF) is a peer-reviewed journal that adopts the single anonymized peer review model. Under this model, the identities of the reviewers are not disclosed to the author, while the author’s identity is visible to the reviewers and to the responsible editor.
Manuscripts submitted to the journal must strictly comply with the publication guidelines. In the initial evaluation stage (desk review), the responsible editor verifies whether the manuscript conforms to the journal’s standards. If it does, the manuscript is forwarded to two external reviewers who work in the same field of specialization.
Two external reviewers are preferably selected from among the researchers registered in the journal’s system who are authorized by the managing editor to act as reviewers. The system includes only researchers holding a doctoral degree. Other researchers may also be selected according to the specific profile of a submitted manuscript. The responsible editor takes care not to overload reviewers and to avoid those who have provided unsatisfactory reviews. The entire review process is confidential, and the information contained in the manuscripts must not be disclosed or used by the reviewers. Reviewers must declare any conflict of interest that may influence their evaluation.
After receiving the reviewers’ reports, the RBGF editorial office forwards the manuscript to an Assistant Editor whose profile is appropriate to the content of the material. The Assistant Editor is responsible for receiving and analyzing the reviewers’ reports, taking into account their recommendations and justifications. Based on these evaluations, the Assistant Editor decides whether to reject or accept the manuscript, and may request additional rounds of review and revisions prior to final acceptance for publication, which may occur more than once.
In the event of disagreement between two reviews, the managing editor evaluates the reports and decides whether to send the manuscript to a third reviewer and follow the majority opinion, or to reject the manuscript. The Editorial Board may refuse publication when the manuscript does not demonstrate the required merits, based on the reviewers’ reports, or when it fails to meet the journal’s requirements.
Scientific articles accepted for publication, after copyediting, are sent to the authors as page proofs for final review through the editorial system. The final version must be returned to the editorial office for publication.
Manuscripts submitted to special issues undergo the same peer review process as regular articles.
All editorial decisions are communicated to the authors, who receive the reviewers’ reports in anonymized form through the journal’s system.
In the event of delays in the review process, authors may contact the managing editor to inquire about the reasons and will have the opportunity, if they so wish, to withdraw their manuscripts.
It is expressly stated that a manuscript may be rejected at any stage of the editorial process if it does not fully comply with the technical, editorial, and ethical requirements established by the journal, including after payment of the editorial fee, and in such cases there shall be no right to approval or to reimbursement of any amounts paid.
Publication Frequency
The publication frequency is bimonthly. Articles are published individually and added to the current issue’s table of contents as soon as they are ready.
Principle of transparency and best practice
Indexed to the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ, http://www.doaj.org/) The RBGF is committed to high standards of ethical behavior at every stage of the publication, which follows the principles of transparency and best practice for publication in accordance with COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics). An organization that has advices and resources on all aspects of publishing scientific content, such as copyright deadlocks, conflicts of interest, guidelines for dealing with misconduct and other issues related to creating a good relationship of production and publication of information. Therefore, in order to maintain the moral standards of a scientific journal, the RBGF recommends readers, authors, evaluators and area editors to read the Good Practices in Scientific Publication document (https://publicationethics.org/files/u7141/1999pdf13.pdf). In addition, it is expected that the authors check the instructions for contributors, prior to any submission and resources related to the ethical standards mentioned.
Ethical criteria for plagiarism and retraction
The Brazilian Journal of Physical Geography is committed to contributing through the publication of scientific articles on Climatology, Social Sciences, Geoprocessing, Remote Sensing among others, offering content in Portuguese and English, promoting diffusion worldwide. To this end, the journal adopts a neutral position in relation to publications, making it a vehicle for disseminating research and encouraging the discussion of pertinent topics related to the environmental sciences, without being subject to political, religious or other potentially controversial topics.
The act of publishing a scientific article demands great dedication, responsibility and involvement from the multidisciplinary team of specialized editors. Each member has an important role in the process of evaluation and correction, with several obligations to meet the ethical standards expected in all stages, from submission to publication of the article.
The author, on the other hand, has the responsibility to credit the individuals who significantly contributed to the design of the article. Therefore, each author must have the capacity and the competence to publicly defend the submitted work. Plagiarism cases occur when an individual uses the work of another without his or her consent or without crediting it correctly. Plagiarism can take place literally, where word-by-word direct copying takes place from the content of another, or it can also occur when the text is paraphrased, so the same words are not used, but the general content is the same.

2. Procedures for dealing with unethical behavior
Identification
If they are identified, misconduct and unethical behavior, can be pointed to the editor of the journal at any time and by any person. Check author’s complaints.
In the case of the denunciation of unethical behavior, it is necessary to provide evidence of the conduct, with sufficient information evidencing the misconduct, so that an investigation is initiated. All claims are considered until a successful decision or conclusion is reached.
Investigation
The editor of the journal will gather the evidence provided, consult his associates if he deems it necessary, and conduct a case analysis, avoiding spreading allegations beyond those who need to know.
Violations
In a mild case of misconduct, the author will be notified and a solution will be discussed. If it is a serious case, the editor, in consultation with his or her team, should make the decision to involve or not other individuals by examining the available evidence to arrive at a solution.
Results
Inform the author or publisher where there appears to be a misunderstanding or misapplication of the standards (and may become more emphatic, if it’s recurrent).
Publication of a formal notice detailing misconduct.
Formal removal of the publication of the journal, together with summary, information of authorship, department, services, etc.
Imposition of a formal embargo on the contributions of an individual for a defined period.

Administration of the Federal University of Pernambuco
The institution Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) is one of the best universities in the country, teaching undergraduate, graduate and scientific research, being the best in the North-Northeast, according to evaluations of the Ministries of Education (MEC) and Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). The assessments take into account, for undergraduate, student performance indices in the National Student Performance Exam (Enade), the structure of the institutions and the investment in teachers and courses, now gathered in the General Course Index (IGC), and the degree and scientific production of post-graduate teachers - by the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), these two evaluations of the MEC. In recent years, with the support of the Federal Government, UFPE has expanded its operations - today there are three campuses, located in Recife, Vitória de Santo Antão and Caruaru - and has expanded its interaction with society, creating new courses in response to social and economic demands, increasing vacancies in traditional courses and offering opportunities focused on the new economic scenario of the State. UFPE brings together more than 40 thousand people, including professors, technical-administrative staff and undergraduate and graduate students, distributed in three campuses: Recife, Caruaru and Vitória de Santo Antão. The university has 100 regular undergraduate courses, of which 83 are undergraduate courses at the Recife campus, 11 in Caruaru and six in Vitória de Santo Antão. In addition to the excellence of its human resources, the University stands out for its physical infrastructure, which is in rapid expansion. In the Campus Recife, there are more than 40 buildings, including the Rectory, nine Academic Centers, eight Supplementary Organs, Convention Center, Acoustic Shell, University Club, Nursery, Student Houses for Men and Women and the University Restaurant. Off campus, in Recife, there are the Legal Sciences Center, the Television and University Radios Nucleus, the Benfica Cultural Center, the Medicine Memorial and the Nucleus of Continuing Education. In the Interior, there are the Agreste Academic Center in Caruaru, and the Academic Center of Vitória de Santo Antão, located in the Zona da Mata Norte. Currently, 128 stricto sensu postgraduate courses are offered (69 Academic Masters, 10 Professional Masters and 49 PhDs), as well as 54 postgraduate courses. The University maintained concept four, for the seventh consecutive year, in the General Index of Courses (IGC) and obtained the index of 3.7468 in the continuous IGC, calculated based on the CPC and the Capes note of the postgraduate courses, being the the highest continuous IGC ever obtained by UFPE since the index was created in 2007. Altogether, 42 courses were evaluated at Enade and 38 obtained a CPC concept, four courses with concept five, 17 courses with concept four, 16 courses with concept three and a course with concept two.UFPE is the eighth best university in the country in number of research groups, totaling 656 research groups in the University, which represent 1.9% of the national total. Of the 4,030 UFPE researchers, 3,153 are PhDs. In all, 35,424 research groups were inventoried in the country. In the last evaluations carried out by CNPq, UFPE recorded an increase in the number of registered groups, from 164 in 1997 to 273 in 2000; reaching 334 in 2002. In 2004, there were 354 research groups at the University. In 2006, there were 387 research groups. In 2008, there were 464 research groups. In 2010, there were 523 groups. The Brazilian Journal of Physical Geography (RBGF) reinforces its commitment to digital preservation and the security of scientific content by adopting the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) and CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS) systems, through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform at UFPE.
These systems ensure that all articles published in RBGF are preserved and stored in multiple partner institutions, protecting against data loss and guaranteeing long-term accessibility.
- LOCKSS: Uses a decentralized system of distributed copies to ensure the integrity of articles.
- CLOCKSS: Functions as a secure and controlled repository, allowing content recovery in case of journal discontinuation.
By implementing these systems, RBGF strengthens its editorial infrastructure, ensuring that scientific contributions remain accessible and protected for researchers and readers worldwide.
In addition to utilizing LOCKSS and CLOCKSS for digital preservation, RBGF maintains a private storage infrastructure, ensuring that all articles, metadata, and editorial records are safeguarded against data loss or system failures.
This additional layer of security reinforces the journal's commitment to preserving and protecting scientific knowledge, guaranteeing that research published in RBGF remains accessible to the academic community and the public at all times.
Publication fee
The RBGF charges publication fee after the article is accepted. There is no charge for submission and evaluation of texts. Information on the procedures for paying the publication fee can be seen at the link below: https://periodicos.ufpe.br/revistas/rbgfe/announcement/view/335

Evaluation Guidelines
Reviewers are chosen, preferably among associated researchers. Other researchers may also be chosen according to the particular profile of a paper submitted for publication. With the profile of the work defined, the software developed to manage the Journal presents a list of names able to accomplish this task. In the system, there are only researchers who have the title of doctor. Among these, two are chosen for evaluation of each paper submitted for publication. The secretariat is careful not to overload the reviewers and avoid those who have made unsatisfactory reviews. When the Reviewer indicated does not have time for evaluation, he should transfer the work to an institution colleague who has a professional profile similar to him.
