Abstract

The South Atlantic Subtropical Anticyclone (SASH) is a high-pressure system in the South Atlantic Ocean that varies in intensity and position. In recent decades, climate change has led to observed changes in meteorological systems, including subtropical anticyclones. This study aims to identify changes in the behavior of the SASH from 1980 to 2018. Geopotential data at 850 hPa by global atmospheric reanalysis ERA5 from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) were utilized. Trends in the intensity and position of the edge and center of the SASH were analyzed using the Sen Curve and Mann-Kendall tests. The results indicated that the SASH is generally expanding and intensifying in all directions and seasons of the year. Therefore, further studies are necessary to understand how these changes in the SASH patterns might interfere with the weather and South American climate in order to mitigate potential consequences.
