From cholera to Zika virus
notes on science and knowledge in times of crisis

In a historical comparison, what are the differences between the Zika virus epidemic (2015-2016) at the beginning of the 21st century and the cholera epidemic at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries? Nowadays, scientists from Fiocruz-PE, Instituto Aggeu Magalhães, give interviews to journalists in order to educate the population about the Zika virus and microcephaly, advising against anything that is not scientifically proven. Based on this historical comparison and reflecting on the results of a study that investigated how scientific facts were produced at the Instituto Aggeu Magalhães when the subject was the Zika virus, this paper proposes to discuss the relationship between knowledge and ignorance (agnoiology); science and ‘knowledge’ taking into account Latour’s symmetry proposal; problematizes the role of communicators (media, in this case) as ‘translators’ of science and, finally, the relationship between knowledge-power and archive, taking up some contributions from philosophers Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida.
