the THE PARDO CATEGORY: MESTIZAJE IN LATIN AMERICA, BRAZIL AND CEARÁ

Abstract

In this article we propose to discuss and destabilize the understanding of brown in Brazil, focusing mainly on the Northeast region and the state of Ceará. The discussion about this category permeated the concepts of mestizo and mestizaje from Latin America with the purpose of punctuating the bridges and distances with the ideas about these categories in Brazil. The purpose was to understand how centuries of colonial domination, as well as national and regional policies, produced unstable knowledge about the understanding of race, and how these policies cross people's lives and the processes of self-declaration in Ceará lands. From a theoretical body, we seek to understand the brown, overcoming the myth of the three races, and understanding it not only as synonymous with black, but also as indigenous.
