Abstract

The article analyzes the relationship between soccer, gender dynamics, leisure and masculinities in a sporting event known as Baba de Saia.  In this event, men from working class neighborhoods in the city of Salvador and other cities in the state of Bahia play soccer wearing women’s clothing. Were analyzed 30 audiovisual productions made between 2012 and 2022, shared on social networks and local press reports. The results reveal the particularities of this event, even as the ways in which it reproduces gender inequalities in sporting practices. If, on the other hand, the Baba de Saia is space-time made for/by men from the periphery of Bahia’s cities which allows to play with the dynamics and rules that order their bodies and gendered performances, still dressing up as a woman step up the virile, misogynistic and homophobic principles that hegemonically sustain certain patterns of masculinities.
