O aparecimento do jornal "O DEFENSOR DO POVO" e a linha editorial seguida por ele, em seus primeiros números, refletem a insatisfação e, ao mesmo tempo, perplexidade, de um determinado segmento das camadas médias urbanas de Pernambuco. No último quarto do século passado, ante as grandes transformações conjunturais que se processaram na vida nacional - notadamente a Abolição da escravatura e a Proclamação do República.
The appearance of the newspaper "O DEFENSOR DO POVO" and the editorial line followed by it, in its early issues, reflect the dissatisfaction and at the same time perplexity of a certain segment of the urban middle classes of Pernambuco. In the last quarter of the last century, before the great conjunctural transformations that took place in the national life - notably the Abolition of slavery and the Proclamation of the Republic.
