Geography, duality and complexity

Duality is a feature of Western Knowledge and Geography, with moral and philosophical roots. Complexity theory brings new knowledges to understand dualisms, questioning hegemonies and unilateralities. Methodological (nomothetic-idiographic), scalar (global-local), thematic (physical-human) and epistemological (space-place) references were used. The rules and universality of space processes are not more important than the uniqueness and internal relations of the places that give rise to organizations and emergencies. Nonlinear local interactions can take on large proportions and affect the globality, with hierarchical classifications and descriptions becoming more flexible. The prior understanding of nature and society becomes secondary and inadequate due to the common archetype of the complex systems. The perspectives are for methodological, scalar, thematic and epistemological inter and intradisciplinary dialogues.
