Exploring cinematographic language in geography teaching
a mediation of the landscape

This article aims to deepen the discussion on the use of cinema as an educational resource in Geography teaching. The cinematic medium will be considered not just as a mere illustration of the curriculum content but as a language that allows students to connect with different cultures, landscapes, and regions of the world. This facilitates the understanding of other spatial practices and prompts reflection on one's own spatiality. To achieve this, the article builds on the rhetorical discourse that the landscapes represented in films can present—specifically, their spatial synthesis power through certain symbolic images, in a manner consistent with cultural geography. Following a route commonly taken by geographers, the landscape will be used as a way to interpret cinematic spatiality. The landscape is also studied by communication scholars who choose to analyze the filmic document beyond its narrative; thus, the concept is used as a mediation between the two fields, Geography and cinema. Consequently, the landscape will serve simultaneously as a conceptual interpretation for Geography and as a guiding tool for film analysis.
