Abstract

In France, the law of the “1% for artistic work” imposes on the State or on the public authorities, to reserve 1% of the cost of the building which they build, to order one or several works of art. Certain artists want their work to be very much visible, but does the public look at it, even if it sees it? Others hide them so that the pondering is a voluntary act. Certain artists base themselves on the architectural work and have a dialogue with it, whereas others oppose to it. A building in particular, and the works of art which it contains, summarizes well the diversity of these approaches, it is about the Higher National Conservatory for Music and Dance of Paris. Through this example, we shall examine the relationships between the work of art and its envelope.
