Socio-spatial segregation: gatedneighborhoods in the lower part of La Cuenca de Los Gómez, Itagüi - Colombia

Abstract

The results presented in this article are part of the research project developed by investigation hotbed Territory of the Social Science School of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana which aims to understand territorial transformations of Los Gomez basin Itagüí–Colombia. The article focus on lower part of the basin, in which in the last ten years there is evidence of accelerated urbanization processes. These processes have transformed the forms of relation with the territory, moving from an industrial use to a residential-commercial use, mainly closed buildings. For the analysis of this phenomenon took the concept of socio-spatial segregation, worked by MariaEncarnaçãoBeltrãoSposito y Eda Maria Góes(2013). The authors say that this phenomenon generates a rupture and restructuring, generating different relationships with the territory and differentiation of the people who live immersed in the gated neighborhoods, of those that are on the outside. The findings of this research reflected that people living in gated neighborhoods have ́t knowledge of the territory in which they inhabit. In addition, they don ́t participate in community representations spaces, generating a disarticulation and differentiation of spatial practices and their relationships.
