Neighborhood occupations in Dois Unidos and Passarinho at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, as recorded in the newspapers of Recife (1870-1930)

Abstract

Notes and announcements from newspapers in Recife at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century (1870-1930) reveal the presence of residents and the development of typically rural economic activities in the communities of Dois Unidos and Passarinho, located on the outskirts of Recife and Olinda. Previous academic research and newspaper articles had only documented the occupation of these communities in the mid-20th century. In order to uncover the earliest records of these communities, the research explored newspapers in the capital of Pernambuco in the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. The occupation in the Cumbe Roads and Passarinho Road reveals a period when the outskirts of Recife and Olinda preserved a rural landscape. The research contributes to the retrieval of the memory of these two communities and the characteristics of rurality in their origins.
