Gender relations in a municipal school in the city of Viçosa – Minas Gerais (2015-2023)

Abstract

This study addressed gender relations in the daily life of a municipal school in Viçosa-MG. It involved an analysis of school spaces based on the territorial occupation of morning shift students (grades 6 to 9), with a focus on gender issues. The main objective of the research, covering the period from 2015 to 2023, was to monitor the daily interactions of students, observing the norms of territorialization within the school spaces with an emphasis on gender relations. The research adopted a qualitative approach, and the data were presented through a descriptive-analytical method. The methodological approach also included field research, utilizing empirical and participatory observation techniques. To interpret the collected data, we relied on Juarez Dayrell (1996) and Milton Santos (1978; 1979), aiming to understand the school space and the geographical space occupied by the students. To comprehend the concept of territory and territorialization, we used the works of Rogério Haesbaert (2004; 2010). Regarding the relationship between gender and school space, we based our analysis on the studies of Joan Wallach Scott (1995) and Guacira Lopes Louro (1997).
