Abstract

The present paper shows the result of a research that sought to investigate the necessity of a compulsory discipline in initial teaching education course in Mathematics. Such discipline is usually named Abstract Algebra and, apparently, is not related to Elementary School teacher practice. In this investigation, the objective was “to highlight elements of an Abstract Algebra course capable of providing the necessary conditions to promote the construction of knowledge/knowledge, necessary for the formation of Mathematics teachers”. To achieve this objective, we conducted a Pedagogical Intervention in a group of Mathematics undergraduate students of a public higher education institution. In that intervention, we took into account several kinds of knowledge that are necessary to Mathematics teacher education. A qualitative analysis revealed that when the investigated discipline is properly worked on, focusing on Mathematics teacher education, it can provide the students good Mathematics education as well as develop argumentative capacity, improving their understanding on symbologies and terminologies that are necessary to mathematical written and spoken language; promote students’ cognitive development, like their ability to do, or at least to understand a mathematical demonstration; promote a change of attitude about being careful to make statements without knowing how to justify them; develop their ability to find patterns and make generalizations, among others.
