This paper aims to reflect on the role of teachers, their challenges, and their needs, based on an analogy with a river, supported by solid theoretical foundations. Just as a river feeds on tributaries until it flows into the ocean, teachers also need to be constantly nourished in order to perform their role effectively. The river, in its course, promotes humidity and favors the diversity of ecosystems, creating conditions for life. Similarly, in order to fulfill their mission, teachers must be respected in their professional careers and cannot be victims of erosive processes that compromise their essence. However, the teaching profession has faced growing challenges, such as low salaries, work overload, and poor working conditions and income, which have discouraged young people from pursuing a teaching career. Studies indicate that, in the near future, a shortage of qualified teachers will be a reality due to the discouragement of the profession. This scenario makes it urgent to reflect on the value of the profession and the need to value teachers, questioning why we passively accept the process of career degradation. This work therefore seeks to analyze these issues, proposing an in-depth critique of the role of teachers and the importance of valuing them for the continuity and quality of education.
