The first pandemic crisis of this millennium confronted us with a new aesthetic regime, processed in another space-time dimension, influencing our way of thinking, perceiving, feeling, and understanding the world. The book Perception Machine: Our Photographic Future between the Eye and AI, written by Joanna Zylinska, Professor at King’s College London, offers the concept of a perception machine to help us reflect on this new flusserian apparatus that is configuring us aesthetically, modulating our perception, and calibrating our affective organization. Post-Photography would, then, be the path to comprehend this complex new mode of seeing, algorithmically configured.
Photography’s expanded perspective offers us strategies for understanding and acting in this transitional world, which transforms around and with images. Zylinska offers a deep study of the ways in which images are produced and how the technology we conventionally call Artificial Intelligence interferes at profound levels in the production of reality. This research is anchored in Vilém Flusser’s Theory of the Image and Paul Virilio’s concept of Machine Vision. Zylinska’s concept, based on the understanding of
Photography as flow, entails a rethinking of studies on affect and perception, engaging in a perspective of resistance to the algorithmically configured world. This new Photography reveals the revolutionary power of affect.
