Case study in public libraries in Natal – RN

from 2004 to 2024, what has changed in their accessibility conditions?

Abstract

This is a comparative case study of the accessibility conditions of two public libraries in Natal – RN, the Biblioteca Câmera Cascudo (BCC) and the Biblioteca Central Zila Mamede (BCZM), based on data collected in 2004 and 2024. The The general objective is to understand how the two institutions adapted to NBR ABNT 90/50. The specific objectives are: Characterize the BCC and BCZM institutions in their time frames (2004 and 2024) on the issue of universal design; understand to what extent the reforms carried out complied with NBR ABNT 90/50 and its updates; to outline a long-term overview of the reforms undertaken by public institutions to adapt to NBR ABNT 90/50, considering that the standard itself also changes. The method consisted of bibliographical research, field visits and data collection (from digital photographs and taking measurements), preparation of light accessibility assessments of NBR ABNT 90/50 and comparative analysis based on spaces and their evolution in time frames investigated. As a result, although the buildings were built before the standard, with various difficulties, there is a slow but consistent effort, resulting in general improvements in accessibility conditions.
