About the Journal
Focus and Scope
The journal Ícone, affiliated with the Graduate Program in Communication and the Graduate Program in Communication and Social Innovation at the Federal University of Pernambuco, is dedicated to publishing research in the field of Communication, in dialogue with the Humanities and Social Sciences, welcoming interdisciplinary approaches aimed at the critical analysis of communicational, cultural, aesthetic, socio-technical, and territorial phenomena.
Its scope includes investigations that address:
(1) languages, productions, and media processes, considering their sociopolitical and technopolitical implications, professional practices, sociocultural mediations, and power relations;
(2) aesthetics and cultures of image and sound, in their sensory, historical, and epistemological dimensions; and
(3) dynamics of innovation, new communication flows, creative industries, and territorialities, with attention to the contemporary reconfigurations of communication.
In this direction, the journal prioritizes works on ethics, democracy, and human rights; intersectionalities and citizenship; consumption; identity and representations; narratives and discourses; formats, platforms, and technologies; interactions and mediations; film theory and film genres; sound studies; technical image; media and memory; aesthetic experience; photography; performance; scene, musical networks, and mass popular music; theories of the image; photo-documentary practices; innovation in communication; creative economy; territorialities; and related themes.
With continuous publication, the journal publishes articles organized into thematic dossiers, as well as articles on free topics and book reviews. Occasionally, it may also include special sections devoted to interviews and reports related to the two graduate programs responsible for its publication.

Peer Review Process
The journal Ícone adopts a double-blind peer review policy in which neither authors nor reviewers are identified.
All articles are initially reviewed by the Editors, who verify whether they fit the journal’s scope and editorial guidelines. The manuscripts are then sent to at least two external reviewers.
Reviewers are selected according to the article’s theme, the theoretical and methodological frameworks adopted, and, in some cases, geographical location.
Reviewers who have any type of conflict of interest—for example, prior knowledge of the research or affiliation with the same institution as the author—will not be selected.
In the case of conflicting reviews, a third reviewer may be invited. The final decision will be made by the Editor responsible for the article based on the reviews. The editor may:
a) accept the article with minor revisions;
b) request substantial revisions to the manuscript;
c) request that the article be revised and resubmitted;
d) reject the article.
For accepted articles, the Ícone editorial team may carry out formal, orthographic, and grammatical adjustments performed by editors and specialized proofreaders, after consultation with the authors.
Manuscripts not accepted for publication in Ícone, archived by the system, are free to be submitted to other journals.
