The development of links with a value chain approach in agricultural production. Experience in the context of COVID-19

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the territories in all areas and, especially, in the economic dynamics. Mitigating its effect on access to food is a government priority. From this angle, in Cuba they sought endogenous alternatives, to guarantee the population's access to agricultural products, in a context of movement restriction and the closure of internal and external borders. In response to this need, a scheme was designed for the connection and reconnection of the links of the agro-chain in Manzanillo, which would contribute to the organization and dynamization of agriculture in the production, distribution, exchange and consumption phases. Therefore, this work aims to show the results obtained from the application of the scheme for the connection and reconnection of links of productive chains, applied to the food production sector in the Manzanillo municipality. The developed scheme and its application in concrete practice allowed the recovery of two productive massifs in the territory and the commercialization of viands, favoring the supply of banana, squash, melon, corn, yucca and sweet potato to the local population andto the contiguous territories. The methodology developed proved to be efficient for the promotion of productive articulation, inter-institutional cooperation and the involvement of the local population, as a way to face local challenges in conditions of food restriction.
