This paper is an attempt to elucidate the importance of the relationship between water and the urban space process in Recife (Pernambuco State) linked to the historical and geographical formation of the city, in the context of nature-society relationship problem. The text discusses this relationship, firstly, from the period in which water and city were valued as two important dimensions of people's lifes regardless their social status, as part of a symbiotic relationship. Second, it takes in account the period in which both dimensions were perceived as separated each others due, mainly, to the social choices linked to economic interests that drove away people belonging to higher incomes from the river areas. Third, it highlights the current process of a local geopolitic around lands located in areas bordering of Capibaribe river, that led sectors of the local hegemonic classes to reoccupy those areas after removing residents from the subaltern classes in the context of (capitalist) revaluation of urban space. Finally, this text accomplish a reflection on concrete possibilities in order to change the direction of this logic of the urban space production. This work was based on an academic and a journatistic literature review about the subject highlighted, as well as an empirical aspects and iconographic materials relating to the presence and use of water in the city.
