In the semi-arid region of Brazil, knowledge of hydroclimatic conditions and human activities is crucial for more effective public policy actions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess changes in land use and occupation and their relationship with water availability in the municipality of Floresta, a semi-arid region in Northeast Brazil. To conduct the land use investigation, a MapBiomas database was used, considering the years from 1985 to 2021. Images from Landsat 5 and 8 satellites were used to assess vegetative vigor. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images were employed to verify the mappings. These images were processed using the ADIVA - Vegetation and Water Index Analysis application. The SUPer - Hydrological Response Unit System for Pernambuco was used to evaluate the water balance. The results showed that the hydrological balance variables most related to vegetation cover and land use are biomass and the Leaf Area Index (LAI), especially concerning days of water stress. These variables can be useful for better water resource planning and management. It is concluded that to achieve water security and sustainable development with rational water use in semi-arid regions, it is important to know the days of water stress and address the spatial and temporal requirements of these days.
